115: 19th-Century Literature and Culture: Manzoni and the Promise of Italy

This course will undertake a reading of Alessandro Manzoni’s great novel,  I promessi sposi, and of the author himself as cultural figure inextricably intertwined with the imagination construction of Italian national political-religious-social identity before, during and after the Risorgimento and the founding of the Italian state.

Readings:
Alessandro Manzoni, I promessi sposi, Garzanti paperback edition, available through IBS (a group order is possible: contact professor at least two weeks before the beginning of the course; the book will not be ordered through local textbook stores)

Various readings on reserve and on B-Courses

A good Italian or Italian-English dictionary and a review grammar text

Requirements: attendance and active participation; reports and other in-class activities; short papers; final project.
