Continuing Student Support Request and Progress Form
This form is to be used by graduate students in the Italian Studies Program or RLL with Italian Emphasis. It is required from all continuing students each February.

Ph.D. Progress Report
This form is required from all graduate students who have Advanced to Candidacy. It is also on a February return cycle.

Outside Students' Application
This form is for graduate students from departments other than Italian Studies who wish to request funding support from, or to teach within, the Italian Studies Department. (Also due in February.)

Support packages typically include a combination of fellowships and teaching. In addition to multi-year fellowships awarded upon admission, a number of internal fellowships are also available. These include the Dean's Normative Time Fellowship (for students who entered the program before Fall 2010), and the Doctoral Completion Fellowship, newly instituted in Fall 2010; both are dissertation year fellowships awarded to students who have passed the Qualifying Examination within eight semesters of their enrollment at Berkeley. It is important to plan your course of study carefully in order to take advantage of these valuable opportunities. Please visit the Graduate Division website for more information. Students who accept the DCF are required to participate in a set of Departmental DCF Activities designed to encourage timely completion of the Ph.D. degree.

Teaching is an essential part of graduate training, and a teaching portfolio is increasingly required as part of applications for academic positions. The GSI Teaching and Resource Center is a valuable source of information and support.  We are committed to training students in the most recent methods of language pedagogy and, to the extent possible, to providing them with diverse teaching opportunities. Requests are filed in February of each year, using the downloadable form. There are opportunities for teaching during the summer as well as during the regular academic year.
