Study of Italy Program Event: Rethinking the Berlusconi Experience in the Time of Trump

Presented by the Program in the Study of Italy, within the Institute of European Studies at UC Berkeley.

Please note: As of 4/25/2016, this event will be held in 223 Moses Hall.

The style and success of Donald Trump in the recent Republican primaries has shocked many American observers, particularly elites that had previously dismissed Trump as a fluke that would quickly fade from the campaign trail. For those familiar with contemporary Italy, however, Trump’s trajectory has been a clear reminder of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s style and political rise. In this talk, noted Italian journalist Enrico Deaglio will reconsider Berlusconi’s politics and persona in light of the recent rise of, and reaction to, Donald Trump in the United States and beyond.

Enrico Deaglio, a contributor to the Italian daily La Repubblica, is the author of more than ten books dedicated to contemporary Italy. His most recent work, Storia vera e terrible tra Sicilia e America, is forthcoming in English in 2016. He resides in San Francisco.
